Left, Right, Front and Rear: Defining Orientation on a Parts Order

“The roller on the left” can identify two different parts depending on whether the speaker is sitting in the operator’s position or standing in front of the machine. A photo can make matters worse because it silently adopts the camera’s viewpoint. Before left, right, front or rear appears on an order, the team needs one machine-based reference and must carry it through every photo, note and line item.

Establish the machine reference before naming a side

Use the orientation definition in the applicable parts catalogue, operator’s manual or service information for the identified machine. Manufacturers may define directions from the normal operator position or another stated reference. Do not transfer a convention from a different model merely because it is common.

Record that definition in plain language on the enquiry: for example, “left and right are stated from the operator’s position facing the machine’s normal forward direction, per the identified catalogue.” If the machine’s upper structure rotates, clarify whether the reference follows the upper structure, lower frame or a position specified by the manufacturer.

The machine identity belongs beside this note. Model alone may be insufficient where serial or product ranges use different arrangements.

Make travel direction visible in photographs

An overview photo should show enough of the machine to establish the referenced front. Add a non-destructive arrow or caption such as “machine forward” and identify the photographed side using the same convention as the order. A close-up of a track roller should be linked to that overview with a label or photo number.

Camera terms help separate viewpoint from machine position. “Photographed from outside the machine looking inward at the machine’s right side” is much clearer than “right side photo.” If an image is mirrored by software or taken with a front-facing phone camera, flag that fact rather than trusting its visual left-right relationship.

Where front and rear components have similar forms, include a wider image showing their location relative to a stable feature identified in the parts information. Avoid guessing direction from sprocket and idler placement unless the applicable machine documentation confirms that arrangement.

Carry one vocabulary into the order line

The purchase order should not switch from “operator left” in the email to “LH” on the order without defining that they mean the same side. Use the full orientation in the description, then attach the referenced photo and catalogue callout.

A robust line can contain the machine identity, component name, machine-defined position, quantity and controlling evidence. If a part is handed, include the actual part number or drawing identity once verified. If it is not handed, do not invent left and right variants simply because two positions exist.

Front/rear and left/right answer location questions, not complete fitment. Mounting pattern, dimensions and applicable serial range remain separate checks.

Resolve ambiguity while the machine is still available

When two records conflict, pause the identity decision and return to the reference. Mark the machine itself temporarily if appropriate, take a new orientation photo and reconcile catalogue terms before the part is shipped or the old component is discarded.

Do not “correct” the supplier’s side label based solely on where the viewer stood. Ask which reference it uses. Once both parties state the same forward direction and viewing convention, many apparent disagreements disappear; those that remain can be resolved against actual part numbers and geometry.

The goal is modest but valuable: every person reading the file should point to the same physical location without needing to reconstruct the photographer’s position. Orientation becomes reliable when it belongs to the machine, not the observer.

Special cases deserve explicit language

Some orders involve an upper structure that can face either direction relative to the undercarriage. In that situation, “cab left” and “track-frame left” may refer to different physical relationships after the house rotates. State the controlling manufacturer convention and record the upper structure’s position only when it is relevant to interpreting a photograph.

Attachments introduce another viewpoint. A photograph taken from the bucket looking back at the carrier reverses the viewer’s intuitive left and right. Keep the machine arrow in frame or add a labelled overview so the close-up cannot stand alone.

Removed parts also lose their location context quickly. Before removal, tag the component with machine ID and position. After removal, photograph the tag and distinguishing geometry together. A loose pair on a pallet should not be labelled left and right from their position on the pallet.

When a catalogue calls items LH and RH, preserve those catalogue labels exactly. When it uses “front No. 1” or position numbers, do not translate them into a different home-grown scheme unless the cross-reference is documented. Position numbers can be more precise than directional prose when several similar rollers occupy one side.

A short orientation note can prevent a long return

The final order does not need a complicated diagram if the evidence is clear. One overview with machine-forward arrow, one labelled detail, the catalogue callout and an order line using the same position language can be sufficient. The discipline lies in checking that every element agrees.

If a supplier asks “left as viewed from where?”, the record has done its job by exposing an ambiguity before shipment. Answer from the machine’s governing reference and update all affected documents, rather than resolving the email while leaving the purchase order unchanged.
