“Quantity 1” has no useful meaning until the parts-book hierarchy supplies its denominator. It may mean one component inside the illustrated assembly, one assembly on each side, or one item for the whole machine. Multiplying by two because an excavator has two tracks can double an item already shown per machine—or still undercount a component that appears several times within each side assembly.

The drawing position of the callout, its parent assembly and the publication’s quantity legend answer the catalogue question. The current repair scope and seller’s package description answer two later questions. Keep all three stages visible.

Start at the figure title, not the quantity column

Confirm the parts-book identity and revision for the exact machine or serial range. Transcribed books and screenshots can omit introductory legends, continuation pages or revision information. A clear item row from the wrong configuration remains the wrong source.

Read the illustration title and identify the parent assembly. An item shown under “right track frame assembly” may have a quantity relative to that one assembly. The same item in a whole-machine summary may use a machine denominator. The number itself does not announce which convention is in force.

Next read the book’s legend. A supplier transcript of the named ZE230E parts-book introduction says quantities are per machine except that a component within an assembly is shown per assembly. That wording is useful for interpreting that transcript. It is not a universal rule for every OEM catalogue, so the actual publication must establish its own convention.

The historical 1981 preview of ISO 6750 similarly illustrates assemblies per machine and components per assembly in a parts-manual format. It demonstrates why hierarchy changes the denominator; it is not presented here as a current mandatory layout.

Follow one quantity through a fictional undercarriage hierarchy

Consider a fictional catalogue whose verified legend says top-level assembly quantities are per machine and child quantities are per parent assembly. Its whole-machine figure lists:

  • left track-frame assembly: quantity 1;
  • right track-frame assembly: quantity 1.

The right assembly figure then lists a particular roller: quantity 3. Under this stated convention, the machine has three of that roller within the right assembly. It does not automatically have six. The left figure must be checked because it may use a left-hand variant, another part number or a different population.

Suppose the left figure lists a corresponding left-hand roller at quantity 3. The whole machine then contains six roller positions, divided between two identities. An order for the right side alone needs three right-hand rollers if the repair scope replaces all three. Ordering “quantity 3 × two sides” of the right-hand part would erase the left/right distinction.

Now change only the catalogue convention: the quantity column is defined per machine even within the assembly illustration. The same printed 3 could already be the whole-machine total. This is why the denominator must be recovered from the actual publication rather than inferred from the picture’s symmetry.

Symmetry is useful as a question. If the machine appears to have equivalent left and right assemblies but the book shows one side only, look for notes, mirrored applicability, separate figures or handed part numbers. The appearance of two sides does not authorize duplicating every line.

Separate installed population from the current repair

The catalogue population describes the configured machine. The repair may involve one failed position, all rollers on one side or a larger rebuild. A quantity of three per right assembly does not mean every repair requires three.

Mark the affected positions on the same hierarchy. In the fictional example, replacing the first and third right-side rollers creates a physical requirement of two identified units. The unselected middle roller remains installed; the three-position population has not changed.

This boundary also prevents the opposite error. A note reading “replace right-side rollers” needs the actual position count from the applicable illustration. Treating the plural as quantity two would be guesswork.

Convert the physical requirement into seller units

Once the physical quantity and identity are confirmed, read how the offer is sold. “Each,” “pair,” “kit” and “set” are supply units, not catalogue denominators. Photographs showing several angles of one part do not establish several pieces in a package.

Use the verified contents explicitly:

seller units required = physical pieces required ÷ verified pieces per seller unit

If two physical rollers are required and the seller confirms one per unit, request two units. If an exact kit contains both required rollers, one kit may cover the physical requirement. The calculation is simple; confirming the numerator, identity and package contents is the work.

A current Cat page for kit 514-0900 provides a real example of commercial scope: it states that 40 pads cover one side for named standard-machine conditions and gives a different quantity condition for named long-undercarriage machines. The page also contains inconsistent component-number text, so no pad part number is carried into this article. The useful point is that a kit can be defined per side rather than per machine, and its named applicability controls.

Included hardware needs its own confirmation. A kit image may show bolts beside a component without stating that they are supplied. Conversely, a package may include hardware that the parts book lists as separate child items. Ordering every pictured or exploded item separately can duplicate contents.

Finish the order line with both units visible: “two physical rollers for right-side positions 1 and 3; seller unit verified as one roller each; order quantity two.” If the seller unit is unresolved, retain the physical need and hold only the conversion. That prevents an ambiguous package from reopening the already established machine quantity.
